Why January 25 Matters

On January 25, 1917, San Francisco sex workers took to the streets in what’s thought to be the first sex-worker led protest in the United States. The team at #OldProProject is commemorating the day with a new podcast (“Why January 25th Matters“) and a series of art advocacy installations around the country.

On Monday, January 25, 2021, artists and advocates sponsored by #OldProProject are debuting projects in New York City, New Orleans, Portland, San Francisco, and Seattle.

“It’s important to remember that we’re part of a multigenerational struggle, and that sex workers have been resisting their criminalization since the beginning,” said Savannah Sly, National Coordinator of the #OldProProject, in a statement.

The #OldProProject is a nonprofit dedicated to changing the narrative around sex work today by telling stories about sex throughout history. In addition to organizing the January 25th event, the group—founded by Kaytlin Bailey—creates The Oldest Profession Podcast (check out their amazing Victoria Woodhull series) and sells some cool swag, among other things.
